Property and Finance Legal Assistant – Working with Vulnerable People

Warwick – c£25,000 per annum

We are working in partnership with a well-established, Lexcel accredited, multi-service law firm, who are looking to attract an experienced Legal Assistant (Property/Finance) to work with vulnerable people, supporting their busy Court of Protection Property and Finance team.

The firm have an enviable reputation, based on a reliable, flexible, personal, first-class service, resulting in repeat business and many referrals. They are very much part of the local community in Warwick. 

The Court of Protection Property and Finance Team are responsible for

  • Managing vulnerable individual’s bank accounts and property
  • Settling vulnerable individuals’ liabilities
  • Managing vulnerable individuals’ utilities
  • Purchasing items on behalf of vulnerable individuals
  • Liaising with the family and friends, social services and caregivers of vulnerable individuals
  • Undertaking asset searches
  • Undertaking benefit reviews
  • Completing tax returns, care funding reviews and the Office of the Public Guardian annual report
  • Making applications to the Court of Protection

The role will involve:

  • Managing new enquiries
  • Taking initial details and gathering  information in order to allocate the matter to the appropriate fee earner
  • Liaising with existing clients, their families and support teams
  • Supporting the fee earner with:
    • Care home visits.
    • Managing properties
    • Managing utilities and household bills
    • Preparing for tax returns
    • Obtaining online quotes for products and services
  • Processing invoices 
  • Managing financial budgets and forecasts on behalf of a vulnerable person including making claims for welfare benefits and payment of liabilities
  • Preparation of all deputyship accounts for sign off by Senior Solicitor
  • Preparing files to go out to an external costs draftsperson
  • Providing assistance with administration tasks relating to client matters

Suitable candidates will have:

  • Previous experience as a Legal Accounts Clerk, Legal Assistant, Paralegal or Legal Secretary
  • Experience of Court of Protection work/ working with vulnerable individuals is preferred but not essential
  • Good communication, organisational and team skills
  • Good attention to detail
  • The ability to deal with people in a calm, patient manner
  • The ability to remain calm under pressure and work to tight deadlines
  • Proficiency in MS Office including Word, Excel and Outlook

This is a full time permanent job, which is office-based, working 35 hours per week – 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday
