Lessons From a Small Business Owner
Talentwise Solutions are currently in our 5th year of trading, and will be celebrating our 5th anniversary at the end of 2024. We asked our Director, Tracey McCabe, her top learnings from her time being a recruitment business owner navigating a pandemic, a cost-of-living crisis and some difficult markets during the last few years, but still going strong in 2024.
Here is what she said:
Running a business is a marathon, not a sprint
“When I set up the business, I made the decision that I would never compromise my values or integrity for any ‘quick wins’. I wanted to build quality relationships with clients and candidates who could trust me as an expert in the industry to always guide them honestly.
This has meant that the business has grown steadily and we have a fantastic network of great clients, and candidates who have provided us with great testimonials and referrals. I really feel like long-lasting relationships are the key to a long-lasting business!”
The importance of a team you can trust
“I am so lucky to have a great team around me – nobody is an island!
I’ve learnt the importance of taking breaks and time away from the business to avoid getting burnt out.
It’s also so important to have fun and be able to laugh when times get tough – recruitment can be a difficult industry at times and requires a lot of resilience – which is a lot easier when you’re going through it with others.”
Accept the things you cannot control
“We work with people and no matter how hard any recruiter tries, sometimes people will be unpredictable! Perfection is impossible and accepting that nobody is perfect is liberating and important.
I strive to continually improve and learn and always do my best. Progress over perfection wins every time!”
Know your worth
“When you first start out, it can be difficult to say no to business, when there are so many potential clients out there, but I did, and we still do. I believe it’s so important to stay true to yourself and be prepared to walk away from business that doesn’t align with your values, or those of your candidates.
In knowing our worth, we have built up a base of high-quality employers who share our values, that we can truly work in partnership with, and provide an excellent service to.”
